National Coaching Certification Program

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) was launched in 1974 to help coaches and coach developers improve athlete or participant performance in all level of sports, not just Olympic Weightlifting. The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) program provides coaches safe sport education, standardized training programs, and on-going professional development through partnerships with National Sport Organizations and Provincial/Territorial Sport Organizations.

All coaches must have an NCCP number, which is your coach education profile, in order to take an NCCP module or to access The Locker. The Locker, an online database developed by the CAC, is used by the OWA to confirm coaching certification and is where coaches can track their progress and development.

To register for an NCCP # or to check your current NCCP coaching credentials, please visit The Locker

Note: If you have already been assigned an NCCP #, please do not register again. If unsure, please contact Competition Administrator

NCCP coaches are described as follows:

  • In Training: a coach has completed some of the required training for a context

  • Trained: a coach has completed all required training for a context

  • Certified: a coach has completed all evaluation requirements for a context

To become Certified in a coaching context, coaches must be evaluated on their demonstrated ability to perform within that context in areas such as program design, practice planning, performance analysis, program management, ethical coaching, support to participants during training, and support to participants in competition.

Maintenance of Certification Cycle:

The Ontario Weightlifting Association and Coaching Association of Canada recognize the value of having certified NCCP coaches that are engaged in Professional Development programs which reinforce the values of lifelong learning and sharing amongst the coaching community.

Professional Development (PD) points are needed in order for coaches to maintain their trained or certified status. Ontario Weightlifting Association provides its coaches with a period of 5 years to collect their PD points from the date of certification.

To obtain PD points, coaches must engage in Professional Development programs which can be acquired through a variety of ways:

  • national and provincial sport organization conferences and workshops

  • eLearning modules

  • NCCP workshops

  • coach mentorship programs

  • active coaching (self report) - How to report? English or French
